American Work Ethic??

It seems the more America grows up, the more its citizens become more helpless, and work ethic becomes scarce. I have been working since I was fourteen years old, my first job being babysitting and from then carrying on to the food industry through McDonald’s and Quizno’s, and from there to convenience stores through Sheetz. It seems that this kind of thing just doesn’t happen very often anymore, Americans so willing to work. My parents encouraged me to get a job when I was young so I would be able to buy myself a car and start paying for my own expenses. I thought nothing of it, thought it was the complete norm. I am thankful that my parents stuck me in the work force so early, I truly know the value of a job and/or career. That is hardly what I can say for most of the country.
I see people getting fired everyday, and can’t help but ask myself, why would the employee let that happen? All I can come up with is that people are very lazy and aren’t willing to either get up and go to work, or do their job when they are at work. It is ridiculous to think about… especially since there are some people who have work ethic and who would love to have a job to feed their families, but jobs are taken up by slobs who don’t give a damn.
Another part of the issue is unemployment. I have seen people get laid off because of the economy and can only receive unemployment checks for maybe a month as they desperately pursue new jobs. Meanwhile, I have seen others who have been on unemployment checks for six or seven months who won’t even go to one interview!! It is awful to watch as people have their houses taken away because they can’t pay their bills while others purchase new cars and ipods with their unemployment money.
It is also very frustrating to work around co-workers who aren’t willing to work. Being called in on days off, cleaning up messes left behind, falling behind by doing work that should have been done, and even re-doing tasks because they weren’t done correctly are a few of the completely avoidable reasons why people who have no work ethic are hard to work with. It is not only frustrating for the co-workers, but for customers as well. I have seen an employee texting while customers piled up behind their register, and they didn’t seem to care at all. Some employees bring their personal life into work as well, even going to lengths of having an argument with their spouses on the company phone in front of customers. I believe people with no work ethic like this shouldn’t even be hired in the first place.
I think people need to start getting their heads in the game about work. It really isn’t something to take lightly, a job is a privledge to have. Some people don’t have them and can’t pay for life’s expenses and truly suffer. So, everyone who has a job, great!! Make sure you are doing everything you can at your job, not just the bare minimum. You may even get a raise
